CASE STUDY: Bringing History to Life at the Library of Congress with Mimo

CASE STUDY: Bringing History to Life at the Library of Congress with Mimo

When visitors step into the David M. Rubenstein Treasures Gallery at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., they are greeted by more than just rare artifacts. In this public space, they encounter an immersive, technology-driven experience designed to make history accessible and engaging for any audience.

Opened to the public in June 2024, the gallery provides a rotating showcase of the Library’s extraordinary collections, including items such as Abraham Lincoln’s handwritten Gettysburg Address draft, Maya Lin’s original drawings for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and early comic artwork from Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Behind the scenes, this experience is powered by carefully integrated audiovisual technologies including Mimo touchscreen displays that help visitors explore the Library’s stories in an interactive way.

A Modern Experience in a Historic Setting

Integrating modern AV technology into the Library of Congress’ historic Jefferson Building (completed in 1897) presented unique challenges. The goal was to create engaging digital experiences without compromising the building’s architectural heritage.

Working closely with exhibit designers, fabricators, and Library staff from the earliest stages, AV integrator Ford AV delivered a multi-layered system that includes:

  • Projection-mapped windows displaying immersive visuals
  • Interactive touchscreens for exploring artifacts and stories
  • Directional audio modules for personalized listening
  • Multi-screen installations showcasing archival films

Together, these elements transform the gallery into an environment where technology enhances rather than distracts from the artifacts on display.

Interactive Discovery at the Collections Table

At the center of the gallery sits a six-station interactive collections table, designed to encourage visitors to explore the Library’s holdings more deeply. Each station combines a 21-inch interactive touchscreen with a 10.1-inch digital label powered by a Mimo display.

These compact displays provide contextual information, videos, and interpretive content that bring artifacts to life. Visitors can browse digital media, read historical insights, and use personal headsets to listen to related audio content.

The result is a layered storytelling experience where physical objects are complemented by dynamic digital interpretation.

Why Mimo Was the Right Fit

Museum environments demand technology that is reliable, flexible, and unobtrusive. Mimo displays help meet those requirements by offering:

  • Compact form factors that integrate seamlessly into custom exhibit furniture
  • High-quality touch interfaces for intuitive visitor interaction
  • Durability and reliability suited for high-traffic public spaces

In the Treasures Gallery, these displays serve as digital labels that can be updated easily as exhibitions rotate eliminating the need for printed signage and enabling the Library to adapt content quickly and efficiently.

Technology Supporting Timeless Stories

The Library of Congress holds one of the most significant cultural collections in the world. The Treasures Gallery is designed to share that heritage with the public through a blend of physical artifacts and immersive digital storytelling.

With the help of partners like Ford AV and technologies including Mimo's reliable displays, the gallery demonstrates how thoughtfully integrated AV solutions can deepen engagement with history while respecting the integrity of historic spaces.

For visitors, the experience is simple: discover, interact, and connect with stories that span centuries. For the Mimo team, it’s just another example of how small displays can play a big role in powering meaningful, interactive experiences in museums and cultural institutions.
